Children & Gaming & Some Shout-Outs

So this chap Douglas Carter has been using The Dolorous Stroke to run wargames using 90mm figures. He's got a blog over at ludus giganticus and it's pretty cool reading. Definately check it out, he's doing something cool and different here.
It's interesting that another play report (JC over at hobgoblinry.blogspot.com, also very cool, touching on oldschool rpgs and skirmish gaming) also had the author playing with their kids.
You see a lot (both tabletop and otherwise) of games ~for kids~ are written to be super simple and have their content toned down. You see these primary-coloured designs, mechanics that are set up to involve minimal complicated stuff and little room for upset, and so on. Honestly, I remember being in school and hating a lot of the dumbed-down stuff aimed at me.
TDS, meanwhile, involves some fairly complex procedures in play, what with tracking cards, stats, etc. No maths that a kid can't handle - at most you're adding and subtracting two-figure numbers, or dividing by two - but it's a reasonable amount of information to track. (Then again, I'm a firm believer in letting the rulesy people handle the mechanics if its confusing, regardless of the age or experience of the player -  you say what you want to do, the GM rolls the dice).
More interesting is that the violence in TDS is, really, quite graphic. People get run through, bleed to death, have their guts spilled, get eyes gouged out. It's nasty. JC literally says "One approving note from the kids: "This game is really gruesome!"." This is, to be honest, fine as far as I'm concerned. You know if your kids (or kids you're in a position to run games for) can handle different content. I knew I could at that age - my parents wouldn't let me watch anything pg rated on TV for the longest time, and then were completely OK with the violence and blood in stuff like Darren Shan or the Dark Materials trilogy. Hell, even classics of children's literature (The Hobbit, Narnia, etc etc) have some scary violence. Don't mollycoddle kids, they can handle stuff a lot of the time.

There's a larp I do that I've mentioned a few times, Empire. There's no age limit, and you have parents bringing the whole family along to dress as pseudo-medieval families and roleplay in a field for a weekend. It's pretty great. My IC group has a few kids in it (ranging from age around 8 to late teens) and I'm consistently impressed by some of the stuff they do. Not 'considering they're kids', these people are some of the most interesting roleplayers I deal with regularly.

And sure, their characters are still basically children. They're kid-sized, they have kid-priorities a lot of the time. But at the same time, they're fucking clever. I've seen them tackling plots that the adults are stumped by. I've seen them make a total killing trading goods and services*. Hell, I've seen some of the older kids (13 & up, for health and safety reasons) take to the battlefield and be pretty darn effective with a spear or a bow. It's not just that they can keep up with adult players. The game's better for their being there.
*child labour laws don't apply when you're all pretending to be wizards and trading fake potions and mana.

I'm sure there's some deeper thought about how we're all just playing pretend, but fuck that noise I don't wanna go theorizing about child psychology or something.

Edit: I'm sure there's something interesting to be said about how two of my more successful projects (Ynn and the Library) are directly inspired by the stuff I read as a kid and aim to re-capture that feel, and are also home to some fairly fucked up stuff. There's no disconnect; kids' entertainment - at least the stuff that stays with you - has some fucked up stuff in it.

In conclusion, I'd like to (mis)quote Sideshow Bob at the conclusion of Crusty Gets Busted:

"
Treat kids like equals, they're people, too! They're smarter than you think! They were smart enough to [catch/impress] me!"

(also seriously, those blogs are neat).

Spam Blog Comments!

For some reason, one of my recent blog posts (not even a good one, really) has garnered quite a lot of attention lately, but not in a good way.

Since 11/22, there have been 301 spam blog comments on that post (and none on any other post)! That's THREE HUNDRED AND ONE spam comments AND COUNTING -- I have no idea when they will let up.

Fortunately (?), I have comment moderation turned on, so these comments aren't actually being published on that post. However, it means I get about 60 emails a day from the system telling me that some robot has left me a comment.

Amusingly, the vast majority of the spam is highly complimentary, telling me how great my post is, how nice my site looks, or how much I seem to know what I'm talking about on the topic. Then every once in a while there's a negative one, telling me they USED to find useful info n my blog, or saying
"Next time I read a blog, Hopefully it does not disappoint me just as much as this one... I actually thought you'd have something interesting to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you can fix if you weren't too busy looking for attention."
It's easy to tell when a comment is from a robot. They're all completely generic, never referring to any specific content. The formatting is often wonky, with double periods after a sentence, or random line breaks. They use words like "weblog," and they're always posted by "Anonymous." But none of these spam comments have any links to other sites, or advertisements for watches, drugs, or gambling.

I've gotten many spam comments like this before, often in small bursts, and often on old, irrelevant posts. This is the first time I've gotten such a deluge, and all on the same post. To be honest, I don't really understand the goal of these robo-comments. I guess the point is to trick me into whitelisting the sender, who might then lie in wait for a few weeks before suddenly posting more comments with spam links? I recall spambots doing something similar when I ran the Board Game Designers Forum -- they would create an account, lie dormant for 2 or 3 weeks, then suddenly make a handful of spam posts (before promptly getting banned by me).

It sucks that spam is even a thing, really. It sucks to get spam blog comments, spam emails, and even physical spam in the mail. But what sucks the most is the thought that if they're doing it, it must work. The whole point of spam is that you cast a bazillion hooks, and you only need to catch 1 fish to make it worthwhile.

If only the entire population would just not click, then maybe over time the phenomenon would fade away. But with how easy and inexpensive virtual spam is to produce and send, I think we'll be stuck with it forever. Though I do still wonder how physical spam is really worth the actual cost of printing and sending out all of that mail...

TL;DR

If you leave me a legitimate blog comment, please make sure you're logged in, because if it comes from "Anonymous" then it's probably going straight into the spam bin with the hundreds of other robo-comments!

Google Mobile Developer Day At Game Developers Conference 2019

Posted by Kacey Fahey, Developer Marketing, Google Play & Android

We're excited to host the Google Mobile Developer Day at Game Developers Conference 2019. We are taking this opportunity to share best practices and our plans to help your games businesses, which are fuelling incredible growth in the global mobile games market. According to Newzoo, mobile games revenue is projected to account for nearly 60% of global games revenue by 2021. The drivers of this growth come in many forms, including more developers building great games, new game styles blurring the lines of traditional genres, and the explosion of gaming in emerging markets - most notably in India.

To support your growth, Google is focused on improving the game development experience on Android. We are investing in tools to give you better insights into what is happening on devices, as well as in people and teams to address your feedback about the development process, graphics, multiplayer experiences, and more.

We have some great updates and new tools to improve game discovery and monetization on Google Play, which we also shared today during our Mobile Developer Day:

Pre-registration now in general availability

Starting today, we are launching pre-registration for general availability. Set up a pre-registration campaign in the Google Play Console and start marketing your games to build awareness before launch. Users who pre-register receive a notification at launch, which helps increase day one installs.

Google Play Instant gaining adoption

We have seen strong adoption of Google Play Instant with 3x growth in the number of instant games and 5x growth in the number of instant sessions over the last six months. Instant experiences allow players to tap the 'Try Now' button on your store listing page and go straight to a demo experience in a matter of seconds, without installing. Now, they're even easier to build with Cocos and Unity plug-ins and an expanded implementation partner program. Discover the latest updates on Google Play Instant.

Android App Bundles momentum and new large download size threshold

Over 60K apps and games on Google Play are now using the Android App Bundle publishing format, which is supported in Android Studio, Unity, and Cocos Creator. The app bundle uses Google Play's Dynamic Delivery to deliver a smaller, optimized APK containing only the resources needed for a specific device.

To better support high quality game experiences and reflect improved devices, we've also increased the size limit for APKs generated from app bundles to 150MB and raised the threshold for large download user warnings on the Google Play Store to 150MB, from 100MB.

Improved tools in the Google Play Console

Store listing experiments let you A/B test changes to your store listing on actual Play Store visitors. We recently rolled out improvements, introducing two new metrics - first time installers and D1 retained users - to more accurately reflect the performance of your store listings. These two new metrics are now reported with hourly intervals and are available via email notifications, letting you see results faster and track performance better.

Country targeted store listings allow you to tailor your app's store listing to appeal to users in different countries. You can customize the app title, icon, descriptions and graphic assets, allowing you to better appeal to users in specific target markets. For example, you can now tailor your store listing with different versions of the English language for users in India versus the United States.

Rewarded ads give players the choice to watch an advertisement in exchange for in-app items. With rewarded ads in Google Play, you can now create and manage rewarded ads through the Google Play Console. No additional SDK integrations are required.

We hope you try some of these new tools and keep sharing ideas so we can make Android and Google Play a better place to grow your business. We are committed to continue improving the platform and building tools that better serve the gaming community.

Get started today by visiting two new resources, a hub for developers interested in creating games on Android and games.withgoogle.com, for developers looking to connect and scale their business across Google. Many of these updates and resources come from community suggestions, so sign up for our monthly newsletter to stay informed.

DE: Updated List And BFG:A2

Still my favorite meme.

Hell, it has been a busy year for me.  Still enjoying playing my Dark Eldar whenever I can, but too busy to attend any events which has been a big bummer for me.  Well, where do we begin? Drukhari are still doing good, but dropped off the top tables once people knew how to to deal with them. Should this be a surprise to anyone?  Not really.  People just need time to adapt and even the Meat Mountain lists have been taking a backseat because Imperial Knights and other shenanigans have been setting the meta.  This is what happens with every new book and that's that people will take time to adapt, figure out the counters and then actively employ them in mass depending on what the meta is.  Either way, I've been getting in a few casual games with my local playgroup when I can but have been primarily out of the competitive circuit this year because of real life.

Don't worry though, I'm still getting my fill of active competitive Dark Eldar players whispering all the good stuff in my ear.  It's one thing to stay active in the meta and the other to keep updated.  The only thing that dulls over time is experience, but active play can always pick that back up.  If there's one piece of advice I can give you folks is to stay updated, even if you can't play so when you do jump back into the fray, you're not behind and know what to look out for.

With that said, my other minor update is to let you guys know that I'll be playing our faction on Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2 and streaming it!  Yes, lol, I also stream.  I was a big player back in the original BFGA1 days but balance kind of ruined it for me.  Thankfully, balance will be a big focus in the second game (hell it better be, all 12 factions!) and the game looks primed for MP success.  Well, success in the sense that it's still a pretty niche market, but it looks to be much more polished overall.  I'll be playing all 3 Eldar factions but you guys know which one I'll be flexing first!

Oh yes, and here's my pure Kabal list that's been doing well, even against some of the new Knights.  I haven't really played against the new Orks though, and from what I hear, that might be rough.

I changed the Razorwings to Flayed Skull just to try them and so far they've been pretty decent.  They normally fly as Black Heart, but I really like their Strategem and the Ignore Cover is pretty big.  With the upcoming changes to Prepared Positions and rumors about more Cover systems, I'm going to be looking at Flayed Skull much more closely.

Grand Theft Auto III is an action-adventure game played with a third person's view. Players complete the mission - linear landscape with the set objectives for progress through the story. It is possible to run many active missions at one time because in some missions, players need to wait for further instructions or events. Outside of the mission, players can freely roam the open world of the game and have the ability to complete an alternative side mission. Liberty City is made up of three boroughs: Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Valley; The islands are unlocked for players because the story progresses. Gamers can navigate, jump, or use vehicles to navigate the world of sports. In the war, auto-purpose can be used as help against enemies. Should the players suffer losses, their health meter can be completely revived through the use of health pickup? Body armor can be used to absorb gunshot and explosive damage but is used in this process. When health is completely exhausted, the gameplay stops, and the players give relief at the cost of losing armor and in the nearest hospital. In Grand Theft Auto III, Combat was re-prepared to allow players to shoot-by-shoot by looking at the sideways. one car. If players commit crimes while playing, law enforcement agencies of the game can be indicated by a "wanted" meter in the head-up display (HUD). On the meter, the displayed stars indicate the current desired level. Law enforcement officers will be looking for players who abandon the surrounding area. The desired meter enters a collapse mode and eventually comes again from the players' point of view when the players are hidden from the line.

The game allows players to control the silent criminal cloud. During the story, Claude meets many new characters from the gang. When players complete missions for different gangs, gang members often defend it, while members of rival gang recognize players and then see them. Wandering freely in the world of gambling, players can participate in activities such as a mini-game of caution, fire fighting activity, a paramedical service, and a taxi service. The performance of these activities provides context-specific rewards to the players; For example, by completing the Guardian mission, the player can corrupt the police after committing the crime. Players use melee, guns, and explosives to fight their enemies. Firearms include weapons such as micro-energy, an M16 rifle, and a flame there. Three-dimensional environment of the game allows the first person to watch with the goal of a sniper rifle, rocket launcher, and M16 rifle. In addition, the game's fights have been reintroduced so that players can get permission to put random shots in front of each other on the side of the vehicle.
